Reporting Absences & Late Arrivals

If you have a sick child please call 343-7243 (elementary) or 995-0300 (middle school), as soon as possible in the morning.  You may also leave a message on the answering machine the previous night or email the classroom teacher if that is more convenient.

If you're dropping off a late child, you will need to sign them in at the front desk before they can proceed to their classroom.  (If you are picking your child up early, you will also need to sign them out.) In case of emergency we need to have a record of all students present in the building.  This also provides a paper trail for our attendance-based funding from the State Department of Education.

Attendance

In the near future we will be holding a parent education night to explain how the State Department of Education funds charter schools.  In the meantime, I would like to offer a basic primer:  As a public school we are funded based on the percentage of enrolled students who show up on a daily basis or Average Daily Attendance (ADA).  The first few months of the school year are a crucial period for determining funding for the remainder of the year.  Therefore, the regular absence of just a few children a day can result in the loss of thousands of dollars for our school.  For this reason we encourage you to consider absences carefully.  By all means if your child is under the weather, keep them home.   However, please make your best effort to keep your students rested, healthy and in school.

Birthdays & Special Celebrations

To better manage school climate, classroom interruptions and student achievement we will be enacting a new policy for classroom festivities. While we understand the importance of individual student recognition, the partying, so to speak, got away from us last year and impinged on the academic focus of the classroom.  For this reason special celebrations will only be held on the last Thursday of every month.  Teachers will develop individual ways of honoring students’ birthdays or special holidays.  However, these will be sans food and more academically minded – but still fun!  Thank you for cooperation.
